फेब्रुवारीच्या सत्रात आपण चार मुलभूत संकल्पनांचा विचार केला. त्या अशा –

1. रूप, घटक रचना व कार्य
2. गुणधर्म व मापन
3. काळ-वेळ व व्याप्ती
4. बदल

या संकल्पनांच्या आधारे आपण आजूबाजूचे जग, विशेषत: सजीव सृष्टी जाणून, ती समजून घेण्याचा प्रयत्न करुया. 

आपली पृथ्वी हा सूर्याचा उपग्रह आहे हे आपण शाळेत शिकलो आहोत. सुरवातीला पृथ्वी म्हणजे हेलिअम वायूचा धगधगता गोळा होता. हेलिअमचे पिवळ्या रंगाचे दिवे तुम्ही काही ठिकाणी रस्त्यावर बघितले असतील. तोच हा हेलिअम वायू. जसजशी पृथ्वी थंड होऊ लागली तसतशी तेथे अनेक मुलभूत द्रव्ये तयार होऊ लागली. उदहरणार्थ, आयोडीन, लोह, सोडिअम अशी घनरूप तर हायड्रोजन, ऑक्सिजन अशी वायूरूप द्रव्ये तयार होत गेली. अणू किंवा ज्याला  Atom म्हणतात तो या द्रव्यांचा गाभा किंवा लहानात लहान घटक असे सर्वसाधारणपणे म्हणता येईल. या द्रव्यांचा नीट अभ्यास केला तर असे आढळेल की अणूच्या रचनेप्रमाणे त्याचे गुणधर्म बदलतात व कार्यही बदलते. तुमच्यापैकी कुणाला अधिक माहिती हवी असेल तर विज्ञान शाखेतील शिक्षक तुम्हाला हे सांगू शकतील.

अशाच रासायनिक घडामोडी होत असतांना मुलभूत द्रव्यांपासून संयुगे तयार झाली. पाणी हे त्यापैकीच एक. प्रथिने, साखर, स्निग्ध पदार्थ अशी कोट्ट्यावधी रसायने हळूहळू तयार होत गेली. असे होता होता केव्हातरी जनुक (तुम्ही नेहमी ऐकत असाल असा शब्द म्हणजे डि.एन्.ए.) हे रसायन तयार झाले. जनुकचे चित्र पहा.

जनुक ची रचना कशी असते पहा. जनुक म्हणजे एकमेकांची प्रतिकृती असणार्‍या एकमेकांना जोडलेल्या दोन साखळ्याच जणू. या जनुकाचे वैशिष्ट्य असे की ते आजुबाजूची त्याला आवश्यक असणारी द्रव्ये जमा करत गेले व लांबलचक वाढत गेले. एवढेच नाही तर पुढे ते विभागले गेले व ते दोन भाग परत वाढत गेले. समजायला कठीण आहे ना? फार विचार करत बसू नका. लक्षात ठेवण्यासारख्या दोन गोष्टी, (1) जनुक वाढत गेले (2) जनुकाची पुर्ननिर्मिती झाली. येथेच जीवंत सृष्टीचा पाया  रचला गेला. पुढील सत्रात जीवंत सृष्टी बद्दल अधिक विचार करुया.

Research

In the last session we discussed 4 fundamental concepts.

1. Structure/Form/Function
2. Quality/Quantity
3. Time and Space
4. Change

We will try to understand the world on this conceptual background.

We have learnt in school days that our earth is a planet separated from the Sun. In the beginning it was a glowing ball of helium gas. As it cooled down number of elements started appearing on it. For eg. Iodine, Iron (solids), Hydrogen, Oxygen (gases) etc. Atom can be regarded as fundamental unit of these elements. Close look at these elements will reveal that properties of element change as per the arrangement of its atoms. Lot of chemical changes occurred thereafter producing compounds of 2 or more elements. Water is one such. Sugars, proteins, and number of such compounds were added.

At some stage Gene or DNA appeared on earth. See photo of Gene/DNA below –

It has two arms as of a photocopy of each other, wound together in a specific way. Peculiarity of Gene was lit started growing by collecting requisite chemicals from surrounding for its existence growth. At some stage 2 arms get separated and new version came into being. It may be difficult to understand. Just remember Growth of DNA and replication. This is the beginning of new world. Next time we will think about it further.
